I was 38 weeks pregnant as we started the year and were just finalizing the final details and meetings before #babyNegin was to join the party, and then Sterling decided to come early. He was born January 4th, and I’ll be working on a post discussing what I’ve learned in my first year of motherhood, but first I wanted to flash back on some of my blog highlights this year.

My Birth Story

Most blog posts and my social media content involved Sterling, I mean how could it not. I’ve fallen completely in love with this sweet and funny boy.

But it was a very different year of blogging for me, doing product reviews and sharing what I learned and what worked for this growing boy.

When I did shoot, I tried my best and feel confident, but it wasn’t a year where I felt my best. I struggled with my health; recovering from both pregnancy and injury, back-to-back. So when my confidence was at its lowest, I pushed myself to face fears. This year I shot basically naked and allowed others to take control of my image. I quickly realized that shooting my own content for the past 6 years, meant I’ve always had the final say of which pictures were release or shared. Giving up that up wasn’t easy, but I’m learning to enjoy the process of releasing that control.

Another post I have coming up is one about my goals for 2019. It will be another year of changes and transitions and I’m excited to get started on this exciting chapter. Leave a comment and let me know if there is anything you’d like to see on the blog, as I change things up.

Sweater Season http://barbaraannsolomon.com/2018/12/sweater-season-2/ http://barbaraannsolomon.com/2018/12/sweater-season-2/#respond Thu, 13 Dec 2018 17:59:50 +0000 http://barbaraannsolomon.com/?p=5869 As soon as the temperatures begins to dip in mid-September, I get excited to pull out my sweaters and begin layering them to stay cozy on those cool early fall nights. As we are now in mid-December, most days I’m rotating between chunky knits, oversized cardigans and soft turtle necks.

So when UNIQLO reached out to share their new collection of sweaters I jumped at the opportunity to try them on and style them for the season. Although this post is sponsored by UNIQLO all opinions are 100% my own.

What I look for in my knitwear is very specific and I always gravitate to whites and cream knits, (I have around 10 white[ish] sweaters that I love). It’s likely because they are so easy to style with any print, pattern and colour. I’m obsessed with the texture and cut of this 3D Lambswool sweater, that has the perfect V-neck in the front and a mini one in the back and cocoons out in shape allowing it to be ideal for layering.

For the past few years, I’ve lived in turtle necks. Tight and tucked-in or oversized and chunky; turtle necks are one of the ideal cuts for sweaters. And it was love at first sight when I tried on this fine Merino wool turtle neck. The fabric is super soft, fine and fitted but not too tight.

After wearing it twice, I downloaded the new UNIQLO CA App, picked it up in two more colours and had them shipped directly to my door. I’ve worn it tucked into jeans and track pants, under overalls and dresses and layered with a chunky cardigan for a sweater on sweater look. If you follow me on Instagram, you’ve seen me in them via my stories and feed for the last month or so.

With the holiday season officially starting, a great way to take knitwear into a more formal setting is with a sweater dress. Because knitwear could add a little bulk, I like to keep things more fitted when it comes to dresses allowing the material to hug your curves. This Extra Fine Merino Wool dress is a great fit and flare cut, making it super flattering. I added simple statement earrings to help highlight the mock turtle neck, adding a touch of glam to the look.

Having cozy and effortless basics to turn to makes getting dressed in the dark easier and the luxurious knits at UNIQLO are going to continue to be the go-to piece for the upcoming winter season.

Feeding my baby http://barbaraannsolomon.com/2018/11/feeding-my-baby/ http://barbaraannsolomon.com/2018/11/feeding-my-baby/#comments Thu, 29 Nov 2018 16:55:10 +0000 http://barbaraannsolomon.com/?p=5811 Our son Sterling was always super interested in what was going on at our dining-room table during meal time, so when his doctor encouraged us to start him on food just before he turned 6 months, I was excited to get experimenting with flavours and textures.

I started with the basics as recommended; oatmeal, apples, bananas and quickly began to learn his favourites like squash, sweet potato and pumpkin. Over the last few months, we also tried new textures for him like chicken and cottage cheese (not together) and stronger flavours like Kosher Sour dill pickles (which he loves to suck on and has helped with teething) and peanut butter (he tried it really early with the Israeli snack Bamba).

It was time to start developing those taste buds and blending more complex flavours together. And with that new task it was time to breakout the Beaba Babycook Pro, a 4-in-1 food processor that steams, blends, defrosts and reheats baby food with ease.

This machine makes preparing for Sterling so easy. The jar is large enough (1100 ml) to fit all of the ingredients for all of the recipes I’ve prepared. And most of the recipes from the Beaba Baby Cook Book are as simple as chop and peel (as required) add water, wait 15 minutes while it steams and then blend. Here are two different cookbooks by Beaba, one for baby and one for mama, but you can pick up this one in store at West Coast Kids.

The machine shuts off once it’s completely cooked and you simply remove the basket and set aside some of the water that you’ll add back in to create the desired consistency during the blending process.

A current go-to recipe that Sterling has been enjoying is the Carrot, Apple, and Potato Soup, with a pinch of cinnamon.

When Sterling tried this soup, it was love at first taste and I’ve made another batch to freeze for those meals out of the house, or when time is limited. I love the Kushies SiliTray, made from food-grade silicone, making it easy to just pop out the perfect portion.

Another favourite recipe from the Beaba Baby Cook Book, that Sterling devoured was the Apple Raisin Compote that can be served on top of oatmeal, pancakes or toast.

With half a cup of cubed apple, 1 pitted date and only 10 raisins, this simple recipe is filled with fiber, vitamins and minerals ensuring Sterling is getting all of the right things from his food.

I served this compote as a part of his breakfast along with cottage cheese and half of a mashed banana. This adorable Kushies SiliPlate has a strong suction that sticks to his high chair and the fact that it’s dishwasher safe makes it one of my go-tos.

I also have an assortment of the Kushies’ bibs that help keep Sterling’s clothes clean. I love that most are spill and waterproof and that they are made in Canada. They also have a pocket (this one is made from a food grade silicone) so any crumbs or drops are safe from the floor and my pup Taco, who is happy to help clean up any mess that does make it to the floor.

Read more about my love for his Stokke Tripp Trapp high chair here.

Thank you West Coast Kids, Beaba and Kushies for partnering with me on this post and helping me make Sterling’s meals easy and nutritious.

Real talk. This summer was rough. As some of you know (if you follow me on IG), I broke my 5th metatarsal on my right foot pretty badly in mid-July and most of my summer dreams were crushed. I wasn’t allowed to swim, long walks were extremely painful, and driving was off-limits due to the cast (a walking one, thankfully).  Some days seemed impossible. I tried to make the most of out of my quiet summer and filled my days with Sterling cuddles, picnics, reading and singing to my sweet boy.

Thankfully, now that Sterling is fully on the move, (and I am as well), one of our first big trips out of the house was visiting one of my go-to mommy malls, Hillcrest. I grew up pretty close to Hillcrest Mall located in Richmond Hill and used to love it, but I moved away after high school and hadn’t really been back many times since. But when my girlfriend mentioned that you could get the H&M Mama line there, when I was in search of pregnancy overalls, I ran there ASAP and was shocked to see how much had changed. Hillcrest was had completed about 50% of their renovations at the time and you can see the beautiful new tiles and redesign of the space.

I soon found out that along with some of the newly open shops like Aritzia, Sporting Life and Starbucks, my favourite baby store West Coast Kids would be opening their second Toronto location during summer 2018. And just like that, Hillcrest quickly became my new go-to mall.

When I got invited to preview their new wing earlier this month, I was excited to hear all about the changes and check out what other stores had opened since I’d been there last. We strolled through the whole mall, peeking into stores like Sephora and Miniso and the newly renovated Hudson’s Bay.

As for us mamas, they have all the amenities to make it your most comfortable visit. With nursing rooms, bottle warming service and free diaper kits that are available at their Guest Experience. They also have parent parking available at all of the main entrances which are crucial for the upcoming colder months. And if you need to connect with Guest Experience you can text 226-210-1015 and ask any question.

The new wing is now open and includes a giant Home Sense and Marshalls (which opened last week), and an Indigo and Old Navy that will both open in the next few months. My friends who own the contemporary store Carbon, located just down the hall, just opened this month and has a beautiful assortment of the world’s most relevant brands, catering to men and women of all ages. The Japanese-styled cheesecake sensation, Uncle Tetsu also just opened their doors early and if you haven’t tried the super soft freshly baked cakes you must.

After the tour, I headed back to West Coast Kids to pick up some essentials for Sterling that I’ll be sharing on an upcoming blog post and took in all the beautiful thing that this spacious store has.

The West Coast Kids’ grand opening is coming up and I’ll be sharing the dates and details on my Instagram account and hope you can join me there and check out the new Hillcrest Mall.

What’s your super power? http://barbaraannsolomon.com/2018/09/whats-your-super-power/ http://barbaraannsolomon.com/2018/09/whats-your-super-power/#comments Thu, 20 Sep 2018 21:50:12 +0000 http://barbaraannsolomon.com/?p=5658 I make milk. What’s your super power?

Dress: Ingrid & Isabel Double Layer Midi Dress + Nursing in True Navy

Being a style blogger for the past 6 years, I didn’t realize how much of my closet would change when becoming a mother. There were the obvious changes, like size, and for me it’s been harder than expected to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight as I’ve been suffering from patellar tendonitis on my left knee and for the last 10 weeks a broken right foot, but I’m not putting too much pressure on myself. Though, I think the biggest change was that I’ve needed my clothing to do more.

Shirt: Ingrid & Isabel Double Layer Woven Top + Nursing in Bright White

As a mom, who has exclusively nursed her son for the past 8 months, finding clothing that is nursing-friendly has been a struggle, especially being well-endowed. Many new moms can still adorn their button-up blouses, or many of their pre-baby clothing that allows for easy nursing while on-the-go, but for me this has been impossible.

Shirt: Ingrid & Isabel Off The Shoulder Maxi Dress in Blush

Luckily, I’ve partnered with the amazing maternity brand Ingrid & Isabel, and have a few key items that have been on serious rotation over the last few months that have allowed for me to discreetly feed my son. Specializing in trendy clothing to take you from your first trimester into your fourth (after baby is born), I became obsessed with their line of dresses and tops and this amazing jumpsuit that make nursing a breeze.

I must be honest, breastfeeding has been one of my favourite and least favourite parts of the last 8 months. I can feel the special time coming to an end as Sterling becomes more dependent on food and he approaches his first birthday. Which makes me feel excited to take back ownership of my body, but also saddens me as I’ll miss the cuddles and closeness that breastfeeding provides.

Sterling is wearing: Romper: Smash & Tess, Outfit: Target Cloud Island (pants, shirt), Hat: Hillcrest Mall
I’m wearing: Visor: Kate Spade New York (old), Hat & shorts: Target (old), Frames: c/o Clearly (black) (pink)
Personalized backpack & duffle: c/o Ketzel Baby

Nursery Reveal http://barbaraannsolomon.com/2018/04/nursery-reveal/ http://barbaraannsolomon.com/2018/04/nursery-reveal/#comments Mon, 09 Apr 2018 23:13:15 +0000 http://barbaraannsolomon.com/?p=5383 When purchasing our new home years ago, we decided on a 3 bedroom, with a master bedroom,  a home studio and the third to be a man-cave, that would turn into a nursery once the time came. Well, I got pregnant a few months after moving in making Trevor’s dream man-cave unfulfilled.

For our nursery, we wanted our small space to feel clean, bright and yet invoke a magical feeling, but as we didn’t know our baby’s gender it was important to keep the space as neutral as possible.  Our goal for the room was to give Sterling a room that he would love to grow up in.

We started with the search for white furniture that would provide as much storage as possible (small space problems). When I came across the Baby Knightly Wyatt 3-in-1 convertible crib at West Coast Kids, I knew I had struck gold. I loved the simple and smart design of the solid wood crib, the brass metal accents and of course the storage trundle. It also has the ability to convert into a toddler day-bed and a full size bed, meaning we’d only be investing in one piece of furniture that would last for a longer period of time.

Our nursery has two large windows and gets tons of natural light and we knew we wanted our only real wall to be an accent wall, but were unsure if we wanted to paint or wallpaper. We came across Rocky Mountain Decals on Instagram, a Canadian company that specializes in easy to install and removable wallpaper. Trevor and I fell in love with the Misty Mountain wall mural and thought it would be the perfect neutral backdrop for our little explorer. The installation of the mural was easy, a simple peel and stick application and took Trevor a few hours to put up. The fact that its effortless to remove is also amazing, as when Sterling grows we can update his accent wall to a different one of their fantastic murals or papers. Check out this video of the install of the mural.

Once we had our accent wall picked, I began to look for accessories and decor that fit the mountain theme. When I found The Butter Flying (again on Instagram), a Montreal-based brand, I loved the idea that the mobile would be the clouds. These hand-made mobiles were so delicate and beautiful, adding the perfect amount of special charm.  The Butter Flying and I have teamed up to offer you 10% off The Butter Flying’s Etsy shop by using the coupon code 10HAPPY.

When it came to planning Sterling’s linens we wanted to make sure that the pattern or print would make sense against our Rocky Mountain Decal mural. We soon fell in love with the playful Bison pattern from Little Unicorn. We picked out the Brushed Crib Sheet and Brushed Muslin Cotton Quilt and a bunch of their swaddle blankets (Tropical Leaf, Lemon and Bike Family seen here) to wrap him in while he sleeps.

Flooring was one of the final details for the room to help ground the space and add an element of warmth. We have hardwood floors throughout our home and I wanted to have a plush rug for Sterling to play on. Lorena Canals available at West Coast Kids is an amazing line of machine washable rugs that specialize in creative and fun prints and spaces meant for nurseries. We never know what will end up on our rugs with a cat, dog and baby so it’s important for this to be durable and easily machine washable.

Sterling’s room is small, so we needed to make sure that we picked things that complimented the space. The Keekaroo Peanut Changer has been the ideal for us, sitting perfectly on top of his dresser, thus taking up no real estate on our floor. Our Peanut is slip resistant and made of a material that won’t allow fluids to penetrate. I also love how easy it is to wipe clean (because accidents happen), without adding any laundry.

Parasol Diaper in Dream

Around the room the decor that can be found are wooden toys, classic books and his future accessories (shoes and hats) that give the room that fashionisto feel.

Strolling Through Miami http://barbaraannsolomon.com/2018/03/strolling-through-miami/ http://barbaraannsolomon.com/2018/03/strolling-through-miami/#respond Fri, 16 Mar 2018 01:04:09 +0000 http://barbaraannsolomon.com/?p=5299
At South Beach. Sterling wearing H&M. Barbara wearing Who What Wear from Target.

Ever since I was little, I’ve been visiting Miami to enjoy the sun, sand and shopping. It’s always felt like a second home for me. This year would be a very different trip for me, instead of visiting my grandparents, I’d be visiting my parents and instead of bringing a friend or Trevor, I’d be bringing my 7 week old son.

On the balcony. Sterling wearing Carter’s. Barbara wearing Universal Thread from Target

The thought of traveling with a newborn was stressful, but once I got his papers together (passport and letter for Trevor stating I could travel with him – which is 100% needed when crossing the border) I got excited to show and experience my favourite place with him. Miami for many is an amazing party city, but for me it’s always been a place for relaxation and rejuvenation. This year with Sterling on hand, I planned to take it even slower for our 10 day trip.

The Flights
I did a lot of research for best practices when flying with an infant. The best tips I learned was to feed upon take off and landing, as the swallowing process helps with the pressure changes. If feeding wasn’t possible then pacifiers could help to avoid popped ears.

I also decided that because I was travelling alone it would be best to wear him using my Solly Wrap and by the time we took off, he was sleeping. My infant wrap (which I love) was actually amazing for both the travel days and on the longer days exploring the city.

At The Miami Design District. Sterling in Solly Baby. Barbara wearing Farm Rio from Anthropologie

The Meals

We visited some of my favourite restaurants that I’ve been dining at each year, like Mo’s Bagels & Deli – which is like the most classic Jewish deli with unbelievable smoked salmon (they call it nova) and amazing black and white cookies, The Original Pancake House – which has the best chocolate chip pancakes, and Joe’s Stone Crab, the go-to spot in Miami for stone crab.

The Days

At The Miami Design District. Sterling wearing Carter’s. Barbara wearing Farm Rio from Anthropologie

We visited our usual spots like the Aventura Mall and Lincoln Road, two amazing destinations for shopping, with the latter having amazing restaurants and a great late night atmosphere.  We also explored the breathtaking Miami Design District and the inspiring Wynwood Walls, a community covered in stunning graffiti and street art filled with culture, cafes and galleries.

Though most of our days were spent relaxing by the pool and taking in the beautiful weather.

At the pool. Sterling wearing hat and bathing suit from Babies R Us. Barbara wearing (old) Joe Fresh, Glasses Kam Dhillon from Clearly.

The Gear
I must say that one of the most important things for traveling with a newborn is ensuring you bring the appropriate gear. The key items for me and Sterling were my infant wrap, our Maxi-Cosi car seat, our Dock A Tot (as mentioned in a previous post) and our ValcoBaby Stroller.

The Snap Ultra stroller was used everyday providing Sterling not only a smooth ride but also protection from the sun with its large breathable canopy. The lightweight stroller fully reclines providing Sterling the perfect place to snooze during the pool days and easily folds down and to take with us in our rental car to explore the city. The large basket underneath was the perfect place to hold our parcels when shopping.

Have you traveled with an infant? What were your tips and tricks? I cannot wait for our next trip together!

Maternity Shoot http://barbaraannsolomon.com/2018/02/maternity-shoot/ http://barbaraannsolomon.com/2018/02/maternity-shoot/#respond Fri, 02 Feb 2018 22:28:25 +0000 http://barbaraannsolomon.com/?p=5190 Sew-Trendy-Accessories_Final1_alt

Maternity shoots are a right of passage that I feel that all pregnant women should spend the time and money on.  After everything your body does during these 9 months it’s important to embrace and celebrate all the changes by documenting it. Picking an outfit that makes you feel glamorous and comfortable is key to having a successful shoot.

This gown was created by the amazing team at Sew Trendy Accessories, a brand that specializes in handmade maternity gowns, formal gowns, boudoir clothing, gown accessories and newborn outfits ideal for photo shoots. I picked the timeless Krysten gown in white, because I loved the long sleeves and elegance of the cut.

When you order your gown and send in your measurement there are some options you can choose from to customize the dress. I chose the boat neck, rather than a droop back, to ensure I could wear a bra and picked to have a simple train instead of the exaggerated ones. If you are looking for maternity shoot inspiration, check out their Instagram account, as it served as a daily source of the most magical and beautiful images.

My Focus on Mental Health
2016 was a difficult year for me personally, so when this past year rolled around, I made it a goal to focus on mental health and wellness, ensuring I spent time outside, reflecting and finding mindfulness while living in the moment.

Life Happens

Our New Home
After a long delay, we finally moved into our first home back in late February and were able to share our first two room reveals. Up next, once it’s finished, will be the nursery which we have been putting together for a few weeks now.

Living The Dream

Styling The Bump
Trevor and I planned to start a family in early 2018 and were fortunate to get pregnant right away. Since then, my pregnancy has not been so easy as I’ve struggled with morning sickness, carpal tunnel and lots of hip and joint pain. We are now reaching the end (37 weeks currently) and could not be more excited to welcome our baby into our family.

Planning a New Year’s Eve outfit is usually a daunting task, having to take into account how you will be celebrating, what the weather will be like, and ensuring you’d be comfortable for what is typically a long night. I remember in my 20s, spending hours freezing while waiting for cabs to pick up my girlfriends and I, while wearing somewhat inappropriate outfits for winter in Canada. Times have most definitely changed.

This year, at 37 weeks pregnant, my night will be a bit different than years previous. Trevor and I will be keeping the evening plans simple and quiet, while visiting with some friends at their house. Now that we are in a new stage, with #babyNegin on-the-way, ensuring comfort will be the single most important thing for me when getting dressed for the evening out.

Like, I’ve said throughout my pregnancy, knits have been my go-to choice of fabric, (examples: 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5) as they are so easy and stretch well allowing for my bump to stay cozy. I quickly fell in love with this simple black midi dress from Tobi (which is on sale now), and it will likely be my NYE outfit paired with sparkly necklace or statement earrings. I am also obsessed with the fact that these stretchy knits will fit well postpartum, as I work to get my pre-baby body back.
