Fashion Magazine asked the style panel about the winter essentials that we can’t live without. For me it’s all about these Dr. Martens. They are comfortable, cool and perfect for those icy and cold days in Toronto. (ps currently in Miami – hence the palm trees)
Here is what I said to Fashion.

The weekends during the fall are a great time to get outside and explore the parts of the city that you didn’t get to this summer. With the nights getting colder, we can already feel the dreaded winter ahead, so take every opportunity to get out and see the city. Where are you going to go?
As we explore the city during the fall it’s also a great time to explore new trends that you wouldn’t necessarily expect for the fall. This season is all about the unexpected. WIth pastels, florals, boudoir styling mixed with punk, fur textures and leathers this season really anything goes.

Something about the beautiful weather we get during spring actually gets me all excited to dress in super bright colours, and sorta crazy! It’s like I get freedom to bare my arms and legs, and all sorts of crazy happens, with print and pattern combinations. I try to break rules and change the way we think about prints and patterns, at the office I tone it down (so to speak)

]]>Through the Japanese Embassy, Canada received cherry trees to a number of locations like High Park in Toronto and Vancouver, back in 1959, to symbolize a growing friendship between the two countries. If you are downtown Toronto this week, walk through this garden to be truly amazed. I highly recommend getting down there sometime as this place is magical.

Bumming around in the summer is probably one of my favourite parts. The ideas of “less is more” and figuring out if your straps would give you “good tan lines” all brings me back to my teen years.
As I conclude my style at the cottage for this year (I think) I just want to remind you what I often have to remind myself, dress for where you are going.
There is no point in being all dolled up, when everyone is in sweats, fashion is a part of everything I do, but at times, its function becomes equally as important.

Pastels and florals for summer. I just really can’t get enough of them. Don’t be afraid to mix a patterned top with a textured bottom or vice versa. This knit pencil skirt has a tone-on-tone linear pattern going horizontally around, I think it really works really well with a tank like this, that as a contrast has its graphic print placed quite randomly. Remember the rules of style and design apply to all elements of your life. Take this rule into your home decor by mixing unexpected styles like industrial and combining it with more feminine elements. Contrast, though may seem scary at times, usually works SO well.

Prints and patterns are a giant trend for the current and upcoming seasons, which is so exciting becuase prints and patterns are generally exciting. The ability to create new looks by mixing and matching different pieces, is unreal and so much fun each morning. One of the most popular “old is new again” prints popping up everywhere is ikat. I think the reason why it’s resurfaced back into our closets and hearts, is because ikat is such an ancient textile no one really knows where it comes from, and yet it feels so modern. It can be incorporated into other prints and used so well for an instant pop of colour for an outfit.
Ikat for those who aren’t really sure what I’m talking about is the method of repeatedly binding and dyeing the yarn before it is woven into the textile, resulting in the pattern having blurry edges instead of sharp lines.

Summer vacation, long weekends, and evenings off in the summer are moments to enjoy. Spend these times dressing up, trying new combinations and styles. Sometimes you want to try a look for the 9-5, but are unsure if its appropriate, wearing it during your time off will allow you to see if you feel comfortable in it, and allows you the time to ask your peers if it is appropriate for your industry.
